The south coast of Ireland remained largely undiscovered by visitors until the advent of the railways. From then on, the seaside town of Tramore in Co. Waterford has grown from strength to strength as a popular seaside resort and has all the attractions associated with a prime holiday destination.

|
From the excellent surfing and beachfront activities to entertainment venues, pubs and restaurants there is plenty to occupy visitors to the town and for horseracing fans there is truly something special in store. Tramore races draw a good local following and present visitors and families with an excellent summer holiday activity.
The name Tramore translates as ‘long strand’ which refers to the outstanding beach. The focus of the town, the beach provided the first venue for horseracing in 1785 and so called ‘strand racing’ continued on and off until 1911 when the stormy seas laid waste to the course. Moved to a site at Graun Hill, 1km from the town, Tramore races continued and remain at the same site today.

The course has been responsible for some notable firsts in racing including the first course in Europe to adopt the Euro currency and hosting the first race of the new millennium, which attracted a record crowd of 11,000 on Jan 1st 2000.
|
In spite of this notable winter event, it is summer racing which most defines Tramore and the Summer Festival in particular which is held over four days in August. Including three evening meetings too, the summer festival epitomises what summer racing is all about; a great atmosphere, plenty of fun-filled events for all the family, superb hospitality, and of course some exciting racing.
Combined with a hot summer’s day there can be no better way to spend some quality leisure time in one of Ireland’s premier holiday resorts.
The Tramore funfair and amusement park is close by too and offers plenty of ways to keep the kids busy before and after the Tramore races.

As the millennium meeting showed, the Winter Festival has its supporters too. A Two day event spanning the old and new years, on the 31st Dec and 1st Jan, it is a great way to enjoy all the celebrations and festivities of the season and see out the old year with a flourish. Co. Waterford is renowned for the friendliness of its people and their enthusiasm for horseracing and when the Tramore races are on crowds come from neighbouring counties too, leading to well attended and highly enjoyable events.
